Chapter 12
Updating Firmware
OVERVIEW
To provide feature enhancements in the future, ATLAS 550 supportsfirm-
ware updating by field personnel. Two transfer methods are available for
use in updating any modules that contain Flash memory, including the AT-
LAS 550 system controller. The first transfer method is via the ATLAS 550
Control/Chain In port usingXMODEMprotocol.Thesecondtransfermeth-
od is via the ATLAS 550 built-in Ethernet port using TFTP (Trivial File
Transfer Protocol). To simplify the update procedure, a common menu in-
terface is available for updating any upgradablemodule within the ATLAS
550 (see also UpdateFirmwareonpage 6-17). Thefollowingsectionsdescribe
the procedure for updating using either transfer method.
XMODEM FIRMWARE UPDATES
The ATLAS 550 supports firmware updating to any upgradable module us-
ing XMODEM transfer protocol via the base unit’s Control/Chain In port.
XMODEMis found in most PC communicationssoftwarepackages. To con-
figure the Chain In port’s data rate and other communication parameters,
consult Control/ChainIn Portonpage2-4andControl/ChainOut Portonpage
2-5.
Please consult the appropriate ATLAS 550 module manual to
determine if the module supports Flash upgrading.
Users must use the supplied connector when using VT-100 or
when doing any asynchronous Flash activity.
Ensure the communications software package being used has flow
control turned off.
